It's been six...SIX...long years since Love Like Gravity released an album. Hard to believe, but true, it was 2015 when LLG released their Chain Reaction album...and then just disappeared. Sure, stuff like that happens all the time in the music world, with bands here today, gone tomorrow. But when its a band that you really found yourself connecting with, it stings just a bit more. Perhaps I shouldn't have been overly surprised since it took nearly 5 years between the band's excellent, self-titled EP and Chain Reaction, but dang it, when I really love what a band is doing, I want more and I want it now!
All tantrums aside, Love Like Gravity is doing exactly what I had hoped they would do a couple of years ago, and the band is readying to release a new album in 2021. Down to three members now, Love Like Gravity consists of Billy Pind and original members Cale Kight and Stan Mayo, with some assistance from longtime band friend and producer, Tony Palacios (Guardian), who steps in on bass on this track (and all others on the upcoming album).
As far as the music, if the lead single, "Devil's In The Details" is any indication, the band has gotten heavier and more aggressive over the years...and that is rarely a bad thing! Starting off with some programmed elements, the track booms to life with crunchy guitars and a really big drum sound on this track about the temptations of sin. The bass has plenty of room to breathe on the track, and there are quieter moments...particularly in the first verse...that really allow the song to expand when the hard-hitting chorus comes punching in. Check out the video below:
If it sounds to you like the band is a bit harder...maybe even heavier...than on releases past, I get the same feeling, which has me very excited for the potential of the new record! Pind offers an edgier, angrier, more emotional vocal delivery on this opening track than a lot of the bands on Christian radio today without resorting to screaming or utilizing excessively harsh styles, which is refreshing. While I love the angriest and snarliest vocals this side of death/black metal, there is still something incredibly powerful about a singer who can relay that same emotional intensity and depth while, you know...singing. And as to the message being delivered here? Lyrically, the song is, as mentioned before, about the temptations of sin, which Pind addresses immediately with the opening verse:
"Slithering beneath your feet,
The invitation tastes so sweet...
Manipulating skillfully,
The twisted tongue begins to speak."
Satan then steps up to tempt with the angry, emotional lines Pind delivers in the pre-chorus...
"Just take what I offer...
How bad could it be now, how bad could it be now?"
While the chorus follows up to blast the listener with the declaration:
"There's a million filthy promises all aimed at the heart,
And the Devil's in the details...
A million good intentions won't erase all the scars,
If the Devil's in the details...
Are the lines getting thinner?
Can't tell the saints from the sinners?
The Devil's in the details."
Excellent stuff, right there! PositiveRockReview will, of course, have a full review when the album comes out, but suffice it to say, I am excited that one of the better bands in the Christian hard rock genre from the 2010's is returning to the scene and with plenty to say! Hopefully, "Devil's In The Details" will see a lot of air time on Christian rock radio this summer and Love Like Gravity will return to the modern rock scene with a huge bang!
